The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is nationally recognized as the leading source of scholarly research and current data about women’s political participation in the United States. Its mission is to promote greater knowledge and understanding about the role of women in American politics, enhance women's influence in public life, and expand the diversity of women in politics and government.

CAWP’s education and outreach programs translate research findings into action, addressing women’s underrepresentation in political leadership with effective, intersectional, and imaginative programs serving a variety of audiences. As the world has watched Americans considering female candidates for the nation's highest offices, CAWP’s five decades of analyzing and interpreting women’s participation in American politics have provided a foundation and context for the discussion.

Position Information

Description of Position:
Through an externship at the Center for American Women and Politics, the student will gain an understanding of Women’s political participation, some research, and program planning. The student will learn about CAWP as an organization and our programs, and assist the Programs and Events team in preparation for our spring events.

During the two weeks, the student will be on a hybrid schedule (two days at home, three days in the office) and will complete small assignments tailored to the student's interests. Some examples of these assignments include:
Short reading assignments related to the work we do at CAWP
Proofreading program materials
Shaddowing in staff or department meetings (as appropriate)

While with us at CAWP, students will have the opportunity to conduct informational interviews with staff members whose interests or career goals align with their own. We hope this will be a practical experience that students can carry with them beyond the externship.
Pre-requisites or Requirements:
A prerequisite is that the student is a rising Junior or Senior. It is important that the student has an interest in politics, public leadership, or social science research. While not required, it would be beneficial for the student to have an understanding of the New Jersey Political landscape.

Since our schedule is hybrid, we ask that the student be comfortable working independently on days when they are not in the office.
