Position Information

Description of Position:
During this one- to two-week externship, the student will gain exposure to community engagement, event marketing, relationship development, and cross-functional teamwork within a major telecommunications company.

The student’s experience may include:

* Shadowing meetings with community leaders, nonprofit organizations, business professionals, and local Chambers of Commerce.
* Attending networking and community events, including potential Chamber of Commerce meetings and programs.
* Observing internal team meetings to learn how departments collaborate, establish priorities, and plan community and sales initiatives.
* Meeting members of the Optimum events team and shadowing them during on-site community or promotional events.
* Assisting with event preparation, community outreach, and post-event follow-up.
* Supporting social media engagement by helping draft event recaps, promotional posts, and other community-focused content.
* Contributing ideas to a small marketing campaign promoting Optimum Internet, mobile, phone, and TV services through appropriate social media platforms.
* Researching potential community partnerships, events, or organizations that align with Optimum’s outreach goals.
* Completing a short final project or presentation summarizing their experience, key observations, and recommendations.

The externship will provide the student with practical exposure to marketing, communications, business development, event management, professional networking, and community relations while allowing them to participate in meaningful, age-appropriate assignments.
Pre-requisites or Requirements:
The main risk is describing these as strict prerequisites, which could unintentionally exclude students who would benefit from the externship. For someone with limited professional experience, I would frame them as “preferred qualities and expectations.”

No previous professional experience is required. The ideal student should demonstrate:

* A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
* Dependability, punctuality, and the ability to follow directions.
* Professional maturity and the ability to conduct themselves appropriately in workplace and community settings.
* A willingness to dress appropriately for business meetings, networking programs, and community events.
* Basic familiarity with social media platforms and an interest in marketing or communications.
* Comfort introducing themselves, speaking with new people, and participating in conversations.
* An outgoing, friendly, and respectful personality.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* The ability to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and accept constructive feedback.
* Good judgment when handling company, customer, or community information.
* Flexibility to participate in different activities, including meetings, office work, networking programs, and on-site events.
* An interest in community engagement, event planning, marketing, business development, or telecommunications.

The student should be prepared to represent themselves and the organization professionally while interacting with employees, business leaders, community partners, and members of the public. Guidance and support will be provided throughout the externship.
