The New Jersey State Museum was the first state museum in the country to be established with a specific focus on educating the public and is one of the oldest state museums in the nation. There are four collecting bureaus, Natural History, Archaeology/Ethnography, Fine Art and Cultural History. It is open to the public 6 days a week and has both permanent and rotating exhibit galleries.

Position Information

Description of Position:
Students will be working in the Natural History Bureau at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, New Jersey with the bureau Registrar and Curators. Activities may involve curation of natural history specimens (such as fossils) into the permanent collections, conservation of specimens, rehousing of natural history objects and public outreach. Time will be split between working in museum staff collections and lab areas and the bureau's public fossil preparation laboratory. Students may be asked to interact with the public on occasion. They may also observe museum meetings if any occur during the course of the externship.
Pre-requisites or Requirements:
There are no prerequisites. Students interested in Natural History or Museum Studies are a plus, but not required. Students with good organizational skills is also beneficial.
