Organization Description:
Yobe Qiu is an award-winning author, educator, and entrepreneur. She has founded several preschools in New York and has published several books focused on diversity and inclusion. Through her experience working in classrooms, Yobe noticed the lack of children's books representing the AAPI community. She has since published about 10 books on Asian culture and is focused on diversifying children's literature. She has brought the very first Cantonese dim sum push cart to the toy market so kids can have toys that represent their heritage. byYQ continues to diversify the book and toy industry to allow kids to feel celebrated for their culture. Yobe hosts multiple workshops and book fairs for authors to help them get their books out there as well.

Position Information

Description of Position:
Students would shadow byYQ's Media Associate to learn about the company's graphic design, news press, and social media process. They'll have a chance to work behind the scenes of a local publisher's day-to-day workload from going through our media strategy for the month to see how a company plans its social media and press-related content. They'll learn how we've gotten featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show and published in BuzzFeed, the Reviewed - USA Today's Network, Entertainment Tonight, New Jersey Family, and others. Students can choose to have the externship either more graphic design intensive or news/press-related intensive — both choices will involve social media.
Pre-requisites or Requirements:
The externship is a great fit for the School of Communication and Information students, English students, Graphic Design students, Marketing students, School of Arts and Sciences students, Business students, and other majors/schools. It's open to all. No prerequisites or requirements are needed for the externship. It will mainly be remote with options to meet in person if the student wants it to be hybrid.
