Through thoughtful reflection and discussion students will come away from this session with knowledge on how they can use the power they have to confront oppression and internal/external biases. This workshop will offer pedagogical strategies and tools that respond to multilingual learners of diverse backgrounds and experiences while incorporating testimonials of current undergraduate students on this topic. By learning about and remaining cognizant of the differences among our community members, we can be better and more inclusive educators. Workshop Description: As a peer leader, knowing one’s own social and professional identity is an essential initial step in developing an inclusive classroom. This includes being aware of bias, including any implicit biases that you may hold, and developing empathy. Literature on the history of the social context of higher education and diversity in dialogue will be discussed and peer leaders will have the opportunity to consider implications for their sessions including beginning to develop guidelines/norms.
