Peer Leaders will learn to effectively and professionally communicate what they do in their positions on their resumes, in cover letters, and in phone or in-person interviews. This workshop will include brainstorming relevant experiences, critiquing example descriptions, writing or revising the peer leader’s own resume/cover letter, and a mock interview component. Participants must bring two copies of their resume to the session. (If you do not yet have a resume document, please draft one before attending so that you can make the most of this session.) Participants are welcome to bring an example cover letter or a cover letter he/she has previously submitted that includes a description of his/her work as a peer leader. Participants are welcome to bring personal statements (for medical school or graduate school) that include a description of their work as peer leaders.

This workshop will be presented by the Office of Teaching Evaluation and Assessment Research (OTEAR). There is increasing evidence that what some call "non-cognitive" factors such as students' sense of belonging, beliefs, and mindsets, have a significant impact on student success. This workshop will summarize some of the literature on these topics and then provide actionable pedagogical strategies and tools to incorporate some of these principles into your courses. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and engage with peers as you consider what strategies are most appropriate for your subject area as a peer leader.

Peer leaders will discuss and practice strategies for managing academic and non-academic needs to reduce stress within their roles, as well as from the perspective of being a student. Peer leaders will acquire stress management techniques and resources that they can share with their students, and directly implement into their practice as peer educators.

Building awareness around our own identities and biases as student leaders is a critical component in cultivating effective and equitable peer to peer interaction. This workshop will include reflective discussion and activities to build practical skills and strategies for creative, flexible and informed engagement of international students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. By learning about and remaining cognizant of the differences within our Rutgers community, we can be better and more inclusive learners and mentors.
