LSAMP SPRE
Comparing historic maps with contemporary geographic information systems data to identify missing or buried streams
Project Summary
The project uses historic maps to identify streams which may have been lost, buried, moved or altered in ways that are not currently known. The historic maps, dating back to the eighteenth century, are digitized and georectified to allow the researchers to use them within a geographic information system. The maps are then compared with contemporary USGS NHD Plus stream data to identify places where the two sources diverged. Areas of great divergence are then further investigated with a combination of geospatial technologies and field visits. (https://crssa.rutgers.edu/projects/RaritanHistory/)
