Spectroscopy of superconductors
Project Summary
Superconductivity is the phenomenon of electrical current flow without energy loss. The high temperature superconductors are already in use in medical applications, power grids, motors, generators, microwave filters, and many other applications. Maglev train, presently in construction by Japanese Railways and by Shanghai Transrapid, recently set the record speed exceeding 600 km per hour.

This project will involve spectroscopic studies and interpretations of materials which demonstrate exotic and technologically interesting states. The objectives of the proposed research is to understand the behavior emergent at the onset of different macroscopic orders, their interplay and competition, to characterize the extraordinary electronic phases found in the materials with strong interactions, determine the conditions under which they are formed, identify underlying microscopic mechanisms, and test the relevant theories.
