Bed bugs have become a common pest in the past 15-20 years in the U.S. They feed on human and their bites cause pain, itchiness and loss of sleep, etc. To find effective methods to control this pest, it is necessary to learn its behavior. In particular, understanding the bed bug host searching behavior will help us find better materials or methods to detect them or control them. Recent research found some novel active compounds that are attractive to bed bugs in lab studies. But their effectiveness as a lure for attracting bed bugs in semi-field setting is unknow. This project will aim to study bed bug response to various chemical lures. Findings will help develop improved chemical lure mixture that can be more effective or cheaper compared to the bed bug lures on the market.
