Self-limiting electrospray deposition (SLED) has been developed by our group for the conformal coating of macromolecules onto complex 2D and 3D surfaces. We have recently demonstrated two capabilities that have opened up a new potential application area: (1) SLED from 99.8% water solutions and (2) multilayer SLED with controlled layer thickness. We propose to use these capabilities to deposit bilayer coatings of protein + excipient coated by a biocompatible polymer shell. Based on the thickness of the two layers, we can control the dose and release rate of the delivered protein without requiring complex processing steps.
