Nonprofit organizations’ survival, adaptation, and thriving are key to the community health and societal well-being. Given the critical roles nonprofit organizations play in social value creation, research has highlighted the significance of organizational listening for nonprofit organizations to advance social inclusion and gender equities. Organizational listening involves more than hearing what stakeholders are saying; it is a communication process that requires actively and effectively assessing and acknowledging their inputs and feedback, and then responding through actions.
This research will focus on organizational listening practices through community-based stories among nonprofit organizations in the Greater New York area that work in issues related to immigration, refugee resettlement, women’s rights, and education, etc. Using mixed methods comprised of surveys, interviews, and content analysis, it will examine how nonprofit organizations listen to diverse stakeholders to elicit positive organizational change and foster community resilience.
