The Firestein lab investigates how factors during pregnancy contribute to risk for autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders in children. The lab studies how maternal, fetal, and placental physiology shapes brain development and impacts risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. There is an opportunity to contribute to a project that aims to examine how atypical levels of hormones and extracellular vesicles during pregnancy are associated with infant and child development. Further this projects will evaluate whether these biological factors contribute to the known association between maternal health conditions during pregnancy (gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes) and child risk for autism. This approach will elucidate new biological mechanisms underlying neurobehavioral development and may provide important tools to identify children in need of early intervention services.
