I am beginning research on a book about the 2000 Florida election recount and its consequences for the American political system. On Election Night, 2000, the networks first projected Al Gore, the Democrat, as the winner of Florida -- and likely of the Electoral College and the presidency. Then they retracted that call and projected George Bush, Jr., the Republican. Then they retracted that call as it became evident that the election was so close that it would trigger an automatic recount. For the next month the two sides argued in the media, in the political arena, and in the courts, as Americans waited to learn who their next president would be. This new history will use archives, press coverage, and interviews to recount the story of what happened--and its consequences, including the start of the rigid red state-vs.-blue state partisan polarization that afflicts us today.
