New Jersey is known as the Garden State given its temperate climate and proximity to the large urban areas of New York City and Philadelphia along with the early history of farming, especially for vegetables and berries (Karst 2024). Michigan’s agricultural production is larger than New Jersey’s and boasts of the 2nd most diverse outside of California and leads the nation in the production of tart cherries (Pohl 2022). Neither state is near the top of US agricultural production but (...)

The goal of this project is to create, manipulate and control the atomic defects in van der Waals materials, such as Vb- centers in hexagonal boron nitride. These defects form effective two-level systems (qubit) and will be used as nanoscale quantum sensors for magnetic and electric field. The student will prepare the van der Waals material and heterostructure, and use quantum control protocols to identify and benchmark the qubits. As a stretch goal, new sensing protocols will be developed and tested (...)

This project examines the origins of policing practices during slavery. Beginning in the colonial era, with the first laws governing slavery, this research project demonstrates that contemporary policing has its roots in slavery and the desperate struggle among slaveholders and colonial authorities to control and dominate the enslaved population. Student researchers will examine slavery’s early laws, policies, and practices to illustrate how colonial authorities cultivated a system of surveillance (...)

Our lab aims to identify modifiable risk factors for the development and worsening of depression and suicidality (i.e., suicidal thoughts and behavior) among adolescents. Our lab seeks to identify who and when adolescents are most at risk for suicidality in real time and across development, with a particular focus on sleep and social media as both potential risk factors and opportunities for intervention. Our research applies a developmentally-informed approach and uses novel technological methods (...)
